Historical heritage

City walk

A city walk itinerary is proposed to discover the small cultural heritage of Saulieu. The “trail” is indicated on the ground by triangular arrows (see following photo). It starts from the Tourist Office, that you can see behind the bull sculpture on the photo below. Arrows are only indicated from point to point . You can see the rest on the map. A brochure with a map is provided at the Tourist Office.

  • Auxois tower

    The Auxois tower, called in French Tour d’Auxois or tour Episcopale is the last of the 16 fortification towers of Saulieu.

    Polar bear, called Ours Blanc, by the sculptor François Pompon.

  • Ursuline convent

    Ursuline convent

    Ursuline convent dating from 1624 and now used as a cinema on one part, for exhibitions on another, a library, a music school amongst other activities.

  • Fontaine Caristie

    Facing the Caristie Fountain, in a wall alcove, there is a Statue of Saint Anne teaching Saint Mary how to read.

    On the same square, there is the Pompon Museum and the Saint Andoche Basilica.

  • Town Hall

    The Town hall dating from the XIII Century was reconstructed in the XVIII Century.

    Turning right and following the street, there is a Madonna and Child statue.

    Dating from the end of the XVth – beginning of XVIth Century.

  • Sculpted wooden board

    In “rue Pasteur” on the left is the sculpted wooden board.

    A bit further on the left, another Madonna and Child
    made of stone. The child was destroyed during an English invasion in 1359.

  • Charles de Gaulle square

    In the 1900’s the horse fair took place on this square. The columns were destroyed during the French revolution.

  • Saint Saturnin Church

    Saint Saturnin (XIIIth–XIXth century) church and its cemetary which hosts the tomb of François Pompon and his wife above which there is one of his statues : The Condor.

    Behind the church is the promenade Jean Macé dating from 1735.
